September 14, AO year 1, week 16 continued

We kind of left off in the middle of a week in the spring. So we are just finishing up week 16 of AOyr 1 now.

Today we started with a reading from the Bible, with a very loose narration. AO year 1 schedules only one bible reading per week to be narrated. Many people do suggest doing a reading each day, alternating between NT, OT, Psalms and Proverbs.  We are going to try that. We read Psalm 1. Fina gave a 5 word narration, which is fine by me. I do think that, in terms of the bible, constant exposure is great unto itself.

We are conitnuing to read The Little House in the Big Woods as our free read.

Fina read a couple of pages of Plenty of Fish.  She recited "Now Fair Hippolyta" from A Midsummer Night's Dream. She wants to recite that at co-op this week.

I read chapter 10 "Hengist's Treachery" from Our Island Story.  Fina narrated it decently.  Have I ever showed you the lovely copy of this book I bought at the St Vital used book sale last year?  For $3, it can't be beat. There is no date inside the book, but Toronto is mentioned and someone inscribed Xmas 1944 on it. I love it!

We are continuing with our folksong, "I've been working on the railroad." Fina sang along-ish.
We reviewed all of our cursive letters.  Fina did a great job and only needed help with some letters (see mom's letters in sparkly blue). Not bad at all, after so many months of not practicing her cursive at all.

We did lesson 23 of our catechism book.
We continued with our same hymn, "A Place at the Table," singing through verse 1 a few times.
Fina wanted to read another couple of pages of Plenty of Fish.
We read the first three poems of Now We Are Six.  I'm looking forward to finding one she can learn to recite.
We did a math lesson, 7E, adding plus 2. She did fine. Then, Fina wanted to "build" with her blocks. I guess it isn't a bad thing to keep the school materials away when we are not doing school. It really leaves her wanting more.

We had a quick lunch and then went to do some gardening clean up with a couple of our neighbours. Fina laid out all the tools and we worked for a few hours with them.

And then our friends L, L, T and S came to meet us at the same spot of the creek to do a nature study together. It was sunny and warm and they splashed and swam.

Fina stepped on a snake in the grass and she wanted to paint it for her nature study.  Try as L might, she could not convince her that the snake could not have been only black without any shades of colour.

We had a lovely day!

We are continuing trying to identify our nature finds from Monday.

We are still trying to find out what this grass is. I have posted on Facebook. We will see what we find. If any of you have any ideas, please let me know!

Thanks for joining us!
