trip to the Art Gallery

We went to the Winnipeg Art Gallery on Friday with Fina's homeschooling dad.

This is a Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot! - "Grands arbres dominant la berge d'une rivière"

From a cast of Rodin's "The Thinker"

Fina's favourite painting wasn't out in the collection, for some reason, and we were quite disappointed about that. We were hoping to take another pic in front of it, like this one from October 2011.

She did love the first nations sculptures throughout. She chose this one to sketch.

Lucy Ittinuar (Canadian), "Shaman's Head" 1972. A sculpture in whale bone.

She stood there for probably 20 minutes or more, looking at it and sketching.  It was wonderful!

Here is what she came up with.

I was looking through their catalogue listing to see if they had any of the artists we've looked at. I found the Corot, but not much else. There was something by David, but we didn't find it either. There were some great Group of 7 works. And an Emily Carr. But nothing Fina had a connection to. She didn't really care for the Corot. She thought it was too plain!  (And, when she was sketching, she told me that she hadn't wanted to sketch the Corot when I proposed it to her. "Well, I'm not going to sketch something I don't want to sketch." Ha!)

It was a great day, though. We were at the art gallery for about 3 hours.

I think we'll need to add "go to the local museum" every time we travel!
